Eric Persson is an American businessman and a co-founder of Maverick Gaming. He has played in several cash games and yielded the largest pots in American televised poker history, $1,978,000.

Background

Persson was born and raised in 1975 in Hoquiam, Washington, U.S. He studied sociology, criminal justice, psychology, political science and government, and communications. He attended the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and earned his Bachelor of Arts in 1998. He attended Georgetown University Law Center and got his Juris Doctor degree in 2001.

Persson says that he paid for his schooling from his poker money.

Persson used to play poker in his spare time in college and was more keen towards cash games rather than tournaments. He started playing frequently in televised poker matches and social media to build his brand. In 2023, he played in the PokerGO No Gamble, No Future cash game and won $1,780,000 pot.

He has appeared in all four seasons of No Gamble, No Future. He has played in the ninth and eleventh seasons of High Stakes Poker.

Persson’s Maverick Gaming

After graduation, Persson started his poker gaming career at a Topeka casino. He slowly rose to senior roles in the casino in Wheeling, WV, and ultimately in Las Vegas.

Before founding Maverick Gaming, he was a senior vice president at Las Vegas Sands Corporation and president and COO of Aruze Gaming. In an interview, he says, ‘All of these men are driven, can imagine the reality they want, and then make that imagination real. None of them stood on the sidelines of life and watched it pass by. I won’t either.’ 

In 2017, he, along with Justin Beltram, started Maverick Gaming. Their first casino purchases were the Red Garter Hotel and Casino and the Wendover Nugget Hotel and Casino.

The casino acquired several small to medium-sized casinos, and Persson plans to keep the company privately held.
