Gavin Smith was born on September 4, 1968 and died on January 14, 2019. He learned cribbage and rummy while playing with his father. He was 26 when he started playing poker and used to play mixed with his colleagues. In 1996, he became a poker dealer and two years later, he set up his poker club in Kitchener, Ontario. Before that, he used to work as a taxi driver.

Smith first became known when he won the no-limit Texas hold 'em and seven-card stud tournaments in the 1999 and 2000 World Poker Finals.
World Poker Tour
In 2005, Smith won the Mirage Poker Showdown in Las Vegas, taking $1,128,278 home. In Oct 2005, he made the final table in the 2nd Annual Doyle Brunson North American Poker Championship and finished third. In 2006, he made the third WPT final table and finished fourth. These three WPT final tables earned him the WPT Player of the Year award.
World Series of Poker
In 2003, Smith first cashed in the World Series of Poker (WSOP). The following year, he played in the $10,000 no-limit hold 'em main event and finished 52nd. He also cashed in 2005 and 2007 WSOP, finishing 471st and 592nd, respectively.
In 2007, he finished second in the $1,500 Pot-Limit Holdem and won $155,645. In 2010, he won his first WSOP bracelet, played in the $2,500 Mixed Hold'em (Limit/No Limit) event and won $268,238.

In 2006, he finished second in the World Series of Poker circuit event and won $293,930.

In 2004, he won the Big August Rec—gambling Excursion Main Event in Las Vegas. In 2006, he won the World Pro-Am Challenge event and took $500,000 home.
From April 2006 to October 2006, he hosted The Circuit radio show, and in 2007, he co-hosted PokerRoad Radio with Joe Stapleton. He won the season 3 of Poker After Dark.
