Hal Fowler was an American professional poker player who won the 1979 World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event. He is the first amateur poker player to become a world champion.

Hal started as an amateur player but later won the 1979 World Series of Poker Main Event. The event is infamous for several reasons, including the entrance fees Benny Binion loaned to him. Hal’s game was erratic, partially because of heavy drug use. During Heads-up, Fowler wanted to quit and return the following day, but the organisers refused. After the WSOP, he faded from poker due to health issues.
