Joseph Hachem is a Lebanese-Australian poker player. He was the first Australian to win the WSOP and take $7.5 million. He is among only five players to win the WSOP main event and a World Poker Tour WPT championship. By 2009, his tournament winnings were exceeded to $10,850,000. He was the fifth-highest-ranked player in live tournament earnings.
Background
Joseph Hachem was born on 11 March 1966 in Lebanon. His family moved to Melbourne, Australia, when he was six. After graduation, he worked as a chiropractor for 13 years but had to leave because of a rare blood disorder that affected the blood vessels.
During his time off, he started playing poker and ran a small brokerage firm in Pascoe Vale, Victoria. Hachem was temperamental when he started playing, but he learned to control it.
In 2000, he regularly started playing at Crown Casino and Entertainment Complex in Melbourne and often ended in money. He played for another five years before entering the World Series of Poker tournament.
Joe Hachem Poker Career
In 2005, Hachem played in the World Series of Poker (WSOP). Before entering the game, he visited Bicycle Casino in Bell Gardens and played no-limit Texas Holdem. He entered the WSOP and won the $10,000 no-limit Texas hold em Main Event, taking $7,50,000 home. The following year, he finished fifth in the 2006 WSOP Main Event. He also won the Bellagio Five Diamond World Poker and took $2 million home. With these two events, he became one of the select players who have won both WSOP and WPT events. The list includes Doyle Brunson, Juan Carlos Mortenson, and Scotty Nguyen.
Hachem was named the godfather of Australian Poker cause of the boom he ignited in Australian poker.
