Sven Magnus Øen Carlsen was born in Tønsberg, Norway, on 30 November 1990. His father was a chemical engineer, and his mother was an IT consultant. Before returning to Norway, his family lived in Espoo, Finland, and Brussels, Belgium. When he was two, he could solve 500 Jigsaw puzzle pieces. His father taught him chess when he was five. Carsen has an exceptional memory and can even remember all the countries' locations, flags, populations, and capitals.

The renowned chess grandmaster started playing poker in recent years. In 2022, he played in the Norwegian Poker Championship in Dublin; he finished 25th in the €880 No-Limit Hold'em Main Event and won $5,681. In June of the same year, reports were that he would be playing the World Series of Poker (WSOP).
In 2023, he appeared on the popular show Hustle Casino Live and showcased his poker skills. In May 2023, he played in the European Poker Tour and was eliminated in 63rd place, taking €15,000 home.
In a recent interview, Carlsen said, ‘There is a Lot of Stress in Poker, Chess is Much Easier for Me.’
