Background
T.J. Cloutier was born in Albany, California, on October 13, 1939. In his early years, he was inclined towards athletics. He achieved an athletic scholarship for American football and baseball and also participated in the Rose Bowl in 1959. However, due to his family's economic constraints, he could not pursue his studies and eventually dropped out.
T.J. Cloutier was selected for the service of the United States Army. But after he quit the Army, he played in the Canadian Football League for Toronto and Montreal. His sports career was not smooth and was cut short by an injury.
After T.J. Cloutier quit playing football, he started his own food company but soon closed it, which was unsuccessful. He then decided to move to Texas following the end of his first marriage. In Texas, he worked on oil rigs and played poker on his off days. Soon, he realised that he was more proficient in poker and earning more than his job, so he decided to quit the job and concentrate on poker.

World Poker Tour
Cloutier has also participated in World Poker Tour (WPT) tournaments. His best performance in WPT was securing third place at the Legends of Poker Event in 2003, which was won by another professional poker player, Mel Judah.

He has also been associated with many writing works. He co-authored a few books on poker with the popular writer Tom McEvoy, including Championship Tournament Practice Hands, Championship Holdem, Championship Omaha, Championship No-Limit, and Pot Limit Hold'em.
