Biography
Thomas K. McEvoy is an American professional poker player known for winning the 1983 WSOP Main Event. He is also an author and Poker Hall of Fame member, 2013 inductee.
Background
McEvoy was born and raised in Michigan. He worked as an accountant but was laid off from his job. Following that, he took up poker full-time in 1978. He was five when he first learned poker and used to get in trouble for playing it in grade school.
Tom McEvoy Poker Career
MacEvoy first cashed in the 1982 World Series of Poker (WSOP). He finished sixth in the $1,000 Razz event. The following year, he won his first WSOP bracelet when he won the $1,000 Limit Hold'em event and the WSOP Main Event.
McEvory played in the Razz tournament in 1986 and won his second bracelet. Six years later, he played in the Limit Omaha tournament and won his third bracelet. McEvory has played in 36 WSOP Main events and cashed additionally thrice since 1983. Firstly, he finished 371st in the 2006 WSOP, winning $34,636. Secondly, he finished 644th in the 2016 WSOP Main Event and won $18,714, and lastly, he finished 430th in the 2018 WSOP, winning $29,625.
In March 2025, McEvoy beat a field of pros-only at the Bay 101 casino and won the third professional poker tour event.
In May 2009, he won the WSOP’s first Champions Invitational, taking home the classic 1970 Corvette and the inaugural Binion Cup.
Other Achievements
McEvoy has authored and co-authored dozens of books on poker. He is also a former columnist for Card Player Magazine. He was a Team Pro representative at Poker Stars from 2003 to 2011.
