Liu attended the University of Waterloo. In her first year of college, she got a dealer’s license, and she worked two summers initially as a dealer and then as a floor supervisor at the Canadian National Exhibition charity casino.

In 2010, Xuan Liu made her first World Series of Poker (WSOP) money and finished 69th in the $1,000 Ladies Championship. In 2012, in a $1,500 Seven Card Stud Hi/Lo tournament, she came close to earning her first bracelet, finished sixth place and took $29,985 home.
